Journaling can be used in many ways and for many reasons. There is no prescribed structure to correct journaling. My goal is to help you learn how to use journaling as worship. Since it is free flowing, for us to discuss how to use journaling as worship we need to have a common language to discuss different aspects of journaling. Listed below are ways of journaling. I chose their titles to tell of the purpose one would journal toward while working in that stage.
Retelling
- During a stage where we are retelling, the purpose is to tell the details of what happened or is happening in your life.
- It covers who, where and what happened and includes the emotions that go with the circumstance.
Discovery
- The purpose of discovery is to find out more about ourselves and more about God.
- When we start to ask ourselves why, we journal with the purpose of discovering what is going on behind our actions and emotions.
- When we look in God’s word we can discover His character and His desires for us.
Naming
- Uses the discovery process to find and put into words a root cause behind our actions or feelings.
- Journaling through questions with the purpose of naming can help find insecurities, questions, unbelief, sin or the lies that we are believing.
Responding
- When we journal with the purpose of responding to God, we enter into using journaling as worship.
- To journal as worship is to meet with the Lord.
- The goal of journaling in the other stages is to prepare us to praise God for who He is and to come humbly, knowing our need and confessing our sin.
